To My White, Christian, Straight, Republican Friends:

I am not okay.

Turns out, it’s highly unsettling when you fully absorb the idea that thousands and thousands of people exist who really do want to see you killed. Who want to do it themselves. It wrecks your mood, makes you super unproductive, and leaves you questioning just about everything.

I deflect with humor. I’ve laughed at how absurd and ridiculous and crazy “all of it" is. I’ve spread the memes far and wide. I have to find a way to process this or otherwise I’ll never leave my house. But the memes will calm down...and reality is quickly setting up shop in my brain. It is scaring me shitless.

A racist. His shirt says “Work Brings Freedom.” These words hang at Auschwitz, where so many perished during the Holocaust.
Source: Twitter. This guy’s shirt says “Work Brings Freedom.” It’s a translation of “arbeit macht frei,” the German words that hang over Auschwitz. If you don’t know, Auschwitz was one of the deadliest concentration camps in the Holocaust.

Let me be clear here. This is not about Republicans vs. Democrats. It never has been for me. I have voted for both, I don’t like talking politics, and am a self-aware people pleaser who likes sunny skies and calm waters.

This is about humanity vs. pure evil. This is about democracy vs. white supremacy. This is about leadership vs. what happens when a lunatic, unhinged, insane narcissistic liar comes to power and goes continually unchecked by the people and systems intended and elected to protect us.

Racist wearing a shirt that implies killing 6 million Jews wasn’t enough.
Source: Twitter. Do you know what this means? SIX. MILLION. WASN’T. ENOUGH. It’s a reference to the 6 million Jews murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust. (Of course he’s hiding his face.)

Your not-white, not-Christian, not-straight, not-Republican friends and neighbors need you now. We need you to check on us, to hear you say that you are appalled by what shook down on Wednesday, that you get it now, that you see it, that you will stand with us, and that you don’t want all of us shot or gassed or lynched.

You probably voted for him. You might have even supported things that happened over the last four years. But if Wednesday didn’t make your heart stop and bring you to your knees…we are not friends. (Buh-bye.)

We’ve got a lot of work to do. I am accepting all nominations and ideas on how we can do it together. I believe in us.

With so much love,

Judith
